01 The rule

When you have to pull in

The baseline in most states is simple: if the station is open and the sign or signal tells trucks to enter, you cross the scale. Some states only require it over a weight threshold, and a few only when a sign directs your class. A PrePass transponder or the Drivewyze app can earn you a green light and a mainline bypass, but a red light means pull in every time. Read the lit signs, not just the statute.

Weigh Station FAQ

Do trucks have to stop at every weigh station?
In most states, yes: when a scale or inspection station is open and the sign or lights tell trucks to enter, every commercial vehicle must pull in and cross the scale. A few states only require it above a weight threshold or only when a sign specifically directs your class of truck. When the station is closed or the "closed" sign is lit, you keep rolling.
What are PrePass and Drivewyze, and how does bypass work?
They are electronic bypass programs. A PrePass transponder or the Drivewyze app talks to the station a mile or two out; if your carrier is in good standing, you get a green light or a "bypass" message and stay on the mainline at highway speed. A red light means pull in. Bypass is a privilege the state can pull, and you still must stop when told.
What happens if I pass an open weigh station?
Blowing past an open scale is its own violation, separate from any weight problem. Depending on the state it is a fine from about $100 into the several hundreds, and officers can turn around, stop you, and escort you back. Repeat or willful bypass can be a misdemeanor and a CSA hit for your carrier. If you miss one by accident, expect to be brought back.
Do I have to stop at agricultural inspection stations?
Yes, where they exist. California runs Border Protection Stations on the main highways into the state, and Arizona and Florida run agricultural or produce inspections. Every vehicle, including trucks, must slow and stop when directed so inspectors can check for pests, produce, and livestock. These are separate from weight scales and can appear at state lines far from any port of entry.
