When Colorado makes you pull in

Colorado's Ports of Entry catch trucks at 26,001 lb GVWR or more. You must clear every open POE within five road miles of your route (CRS 42-8-105). A green light from PrePass or Drivewyze (Monument on I-25) clears you; no signal means pull in. Ports sit on I-25, I-70, and I-76. Skip one and it is a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense, $150 to $300; three strikes in a year can cost your authority (CRS 42-8-109).

Stations, bypass, and inspection

• Who must stop: Over a weight threshold
• Where the stations are: Ports of Entry on I-25 (Monument, Trinidad), I-70, I-76 (Fort Morgan), and US-50. You must clear any open POE located within five road miles of your normal route. Hours vary; portable crews supplement the fixed ports.
• Bypass: Drivewyze covers Colorado (busiest site is Monument on I-25) and PrePass operates statewide. A green light clears you; no signal means pull in. Colorado State Patrol also grants special revocable permits that waive seeking out off-route ports for scheduled runs.
• Ag / border inspection: No inbound produce or border pest stations. Agricultural compliance is folded into port-of-entry checks rather than a separate quarantine checkpoint.
• Fine for passing an open station: Failure to clear an open POE within five road miles of your route is a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense, $150 to $300. A third conviction in one calendar year can trigger suspension or revocation of operating authority (CRS 42-8-105, 42-8-109).
