Virginia Weigh Stations & Ag Inspection
Run over 10,000 lb gross or registered weight and you must pull into a permanent scale when highway signs direct you (Va. Code 46.2-1137). Blow past it, or refuse an officer's order to drive to a scale within 10 road miles, and it's a Class 4 misdemeanor on top of any overweight fine. The Class 4 cap is $250. Main scales sit on I-81 at Stephens City, I-95, I-77, and I-64; obey the lit OPEN sign.

Stations, bypass, and inspection
- Who must stop: Over a weight threshold
- Where the stations are: Permanent scales sit on I-81 at Stephens City, I-95 (Dumfries and Carson), I-77 near Fancy Gap, I-64, and I-85, with WIM pre-screening. Hours vary behind lit OPEN signs. Virginia State Police Motor Carrier and DMV also run portable scales and can order you to a nearby permanent scale.
- Bypass: PrePass and Drivewyze both operate in Virginia. Drivewyze bypass is active at the Stephens City scales on I-81; PrePass covers scales on the I-81, I-95, and I-77 corridors. Green means bypass, red or no signal means enter and stop.
- Ag / border inspection: No agricultural or border inspection stations. Virginia enforces plant-pest rules through VDACS, not roadside must-stop produce checkpoints.
- Fine for passing an open station: Refusing an officer's order to drive to a permanent scale, or failing to enter when signs direct a vehicle over 10,000 lb, is a Class 4 misdemeanor (Va. Code 46.2-1137): a fine up to $250, on top of any overweight penalty.
