Work Zone Laws by State
The reduced work-zone speed limit and whether it bites only when workers are present or always, doubled and enhanced fines, work-zone phone rules, and the flagger's authority. Not the same as Move Over. Covers all 50 states and DC. Reference only, not legal advice.
Reduced speed, heavier fines, obey the flagger
A work zone changes three things at once. The speed limit drops to whatever the orange signs post, and it holds through the whole zone. The fine climbs, most often doubled, though states split on whether that needs workers present or applies any time the zone is up. And a flagger gains the authority of a traffic signal, so their paddle is the law. Watch the "workers present" wording. It decides whether the enhanced penalty is on right now.
