Reduced speed, heavier fines, obey the flagger

A work zone changes three things at once. The speed limit drops to whatever the orange signs post, and it holds through the whole zone. The fine climbs, most often doubled, though states split on whether that needs workers present or applies any time the zone is up. And a flagger gains the authority of a traffic signal, so their paddle is the law. Watch the "workers present" wording. It decides whether the enhanced penalty is on right now.

Work Zone FAQ

Do fines really double in a work zone?
In most states, yes. A speeding or moving violation inside a marked work zone carries a heavier penalty, and doubling the fine is the common form. The catch is when it applies. Some states double the fine only when workers are actually present, others double it any time the zone is signed and active. Read the signs. "Fines double when workers present" means something different from a zone that is always enhanced.
What is the work zone speed limit?
It is whatever the orange signs post, and it is usually well below the normal limit. The reduced limit stays in force through the whole marked zone, not just the stretch where you see workers. Slow to the posted work-zone speed as soon as you pass the sign and hold it until the "End Road Work" sign. Speed cameras run in work zones in a growing number of states.
Do I have to obey a flagger?
Yes. A flagger directing traffic in a work zone has the authority of a traffic control signal. When the paddle turns to STOP you stop, when it turns to SLOW you crawl through. Disobeying a flagger is a citable offense on its own, and in a work zone it stacks with the enhanced penalties. Treat the flagger as the law inside that zone, because that is exactly what they are.
Can I use my phone in a work zone?
Assume no. Many states either ban handheld phone use for all drivers, which covers work zones, or single out work zones for a stricter rule. A CDL driver is already under the federal handheld ban on any commercial run. In a work zone the ticket costs more and the risk is higher. Put the phone down from the first orange sign to the last.
