When Vermont makes you pull in

Vermont runs border-style weigh stations where its interstates enter the state: I-89 at White River Junction and Highgate Springs, I-91 at Guilford and Derby Line. When a station is open, all commercial traffic reports in, and roving patrols catch the rest. Drivewyze PreClear is the only bypass here, so without a green signal you obey the lit sign. Failing to stop is a civil violation fined off the state schedule, with CDL fallout (23 V.S.A. §1391 et seq.).

Stations, bypass, and inspection

• Who must stop: Only when a sign directs
• Where the stations are: Border-style fixed stations on I-89 (White River Junction near New Hampshire, Highgate Springs near Canada) and I-91 (Guilford near Massachusetts, Derby Line near Canada), plus US-7. They screen commercial traffic entering the state; roving patrols cover the rest.
• Bypass: Drivewyze PreClear only. Vermont authorized Drivewyze for its border weigh stations; PrePass is not offered here. A green signal means bypass; no signal means report in.
• Ag / border inspection: No state produce-inspection stations. The Canadian border crossings are federal CBP, not a state ag stop.
• Fine for passing an open station: $500 to $2,500 for failing or refusing to stop and submit the vehicle and load to weighing, and at the time of the violation the officer may impound the rig, have it weighed, and release it only after you pay towing (23 V.S.A. §1411). That maximum is above the $1,000 ceiling for a civil traffic violation, so it is not a Judicial Bureau schedule ticket (23 V.S.A. §2302(a)). The weight itself is fined separately off the civil schedule, which starts at $15 per 1,000 lb over (23 V.S.A. §1391a).
