Washington Weigh Stations & Ag Inspection
When a Washington scale is lit and the ramp signal points you in, you enter. The State Patrol runs the ports, and RCW 46.44.105 makes ducking an open scale unlawful on top of any weight fine. Weigh-in-motion pre-screens I-5 and I-90 traffic, so plenty of trucks roll straight past. Hauling cattle over 40,000 lb? You must stop at a WSP port of entry or eat a $1,000 penalty (RCW 46.44.200).

Stations, bypass, and inspection
- Who must stop: Only when a sign directs
- Where the stations are: Fixed State Patrol scales cluster on I-5 (Bow Hill, Ridgefield, Kelso, and the SeaTac area) and I-90 (Cle Elum, Tokio, Spokane), with more on I-82 and US routes. Signs and ramp signals show OPEN or dark; hours vary. Weigh-in-motion sensors pre-screen mainline trucks, so many never leave the highway even when a scale is open.
- Bypass: Drivewyze (app/ELD) works at Washington scales. The state's fixed sites read NORPASS transponders, the Pacific Northwest bypass program, and PrePass transponders interoperate at many Washington locations. A green reading keeps you on the mainline; a red or no signal means pull in and stop.
- Ag / border inspection: No mandatory produce-inspection stations for through traffic. WSDA runs pest and nursery quarantine programs off the highway, not a roadside ag stop like California's. The border produce stations that matter to you sit south, on the California state line.
- Fine for passing an open station: Ducking an open WSP scale violates RCW 46.44.105, and that penalty rides on top of any overweight fine (the weight schedule runs from a few cents per pound into the thousands). A gross-over-40,000-lb load of cattle that fails to stop at a WSP port of entry is a flat $1,000 (RCW 46.44.200).
