When Indiana makes you pull in

If an Indiana scale is open, every truck exits, pickups with trailers and rentals included, no weight cutoff (IC 9-20-17). Ten fixed stations sit on I-65, I-69, I-70, I-74, and I-94, flagged by lit OPEN signs and backed by portable scales. A trooper can also send you to the nearest scale within five miles (IC 9-20-17-3). Skip an open station and it's a Class C infraction, a judgment up to $500 (IC 9-20-18-12).

Stations, bypass, and inspection

• Who must stop: All CMVs must stop
• Where the stations are: Ten fixed stations: I-65 (Lowell, Seymour), I-69 (Huntington), I-70 (Richmond, Terre Haute), I-74 (Crawfordsville, West Harrison), and I-94 (Michigan City/Chesterton). Lit OPEN signs mean all trucks exit; portable scales cover secondary highways and the gaps between fixed sites.
• Bypass: Both widely available across the 10 fixed stations. Drivewyze's busiest Indiana site is Lowell SB on I-65 south of Gary; PrePass covers Seymour NB on I-65, among others. Green light bypasses an open scale; red or no signal means enter and stop.
• Ag / border inspection: None. No agricultural or border produce-inspection stations; the fixed sites are weight and safety scales only.
• Fine for passing an open station: Class C infraction, a civil judgment up to $500 (IC 9-20-18-12). Overweight found after the fact carries its own escalating fines (Class B/A infractions above 5,000 and 10,000 lb of excess).
