How Kentucky handles work zones

Kentucky hits hard in a work zone, but only with a worker present. A traffic violation there runs a flat $500 under Ky. Rev. Stat. §189.2327, which needs posted signs warning that fines increase and a bona fide worker on site, and $500 to $10,000 if you injure or kill someone. Since June 27, 2025 an officer in a marked car at or near the end of the zone can write that ticket off an automated speed enforcement device at 10+ mph over, with a worker present and flashing camera-warning signs up (§189.2326). No worker, no enhancement, though the posted limit still stands. Kentucky bans texting, not all handheld use, so there's no separate work-zone phone rule. Obey a flagger's signal like a traffic officer's (§189.393).

Speed, fines, phone, and the flagger

• Speed rule: Obey the posted reduced limit through the marked zone. The steep money applies only when at least one bona fide worker is present and signs warn that fines increase. No worker, the posted limit still binds but the enhancement is off.
• Fine multiplier: A flat $500 fine for a work-zone traffic violation with a worker present and warning signs posted, and $500 to $10,000 if the violation injures or kills someone (Ky. Rev. Stat. §189.2327). Kentucky does not double work-zone fines; §189.394 doubles fines only in school areas with flashing lights.
• Phone in a work zone: Covered by the general handheld rule
• Flagger authority: Obey a flagger's signal as you would a traffic officer's (Ky. Rev. Stat. §189.393). The work-zone paddle directs traffic and disobeying is citable.
• Base fine: $500 flat for a work-zone traffic violation when a worker is present and warning signs are posted, and $500 to $10,000 if the violation injures or kills someone (§189.2327); otherwise the standard speeding fine. There is no separate work-zone doubling.
