How Kansas handles work zones

Kansas doubles the uniform-schedule fine for any moving violation committed in a road construction zone (K.S.A. §8-2118; zone defined in §8-1458a). No worker-present requirement: the zone is whatever the posted or moving signs mark off. A $75 schedule fine for 15 over becomes $150 doubled, plus court costs. Zones post 'FINES DOUBLE' or 'INCREASED FINES.' The reduced limit binds you whenever the signs stand. A flagger's paddle is a traffic-control device. No statewide handheld ban, only a texting ban.

Speed, fines, phone, and the flagger

• Speed rule: Obey the posted construction-zone limit while the signs stand. The doubled fine applies to any moving violation committed in the signed zone, whether or not workers are present.

• Flagger authority: A flagger's STOP/SLOW paddle is an official traffic-control device you must obey (K.S.A. §8-1507), and you must comply with a lawful order of a person directing traffic (§8-1503); disobeying is a citable offense.
• Base fine: The uniform fine-schedule amount for the speed (for example $75 for 15 mph over), doubled anywhere in a signed road construction zone, plus court costs. No workers-present requirement.
