How Wyoming handles work zones

Wyoming skips the 'double' and simply charges more. A dedicated construction-zone fine schedule keys to the posted limit: about $95 plus $7 a mph for 11 to 20 over, and $195 plus $7 past 20 over (W.S. 31-5-1201(d)(vii)). It applies whenever the zone is signed, workers or not, and it is a misdemeanor. Obey the flagger's paddle as a traffic-control device (31-5-402). Statewide, only texting is banned, so keep the phone down anyway.

Speed, fines, phone, and the flagger

• Speed rule: The posted construction-zone limit applies whenever the zone is signed, workers or not. Wyoming attaches a separate, higher construction-zone fine schedule to that posted limit (W.S. 31-5-1201(d)(vii)); applies always while signed.
• Fine multiplier: No flat doubling; a stiffer fixed schedule instead. In a construction zone Wyoming charges $40 plus $7/mph for 6-10 over, $95 plus $7/mph for 11-20 over, and $195 plus $7/mph past 20 over (W.S. 31-5-1201(d)(vii)). Applies whenever the zone is signed.
• Phone in a work zone: Covered by the general handheld rule
• Flagger authority: You must obey any official traffic-control device unless a police officer directs otherwise (W.S. 31-5-402); a flagger's paddle is such a device, and a violation is a misdemeanor under W.S. 31-5-1201.
• Base fine: Construction-zone schedule (W.S. 31-5-1201(d)(vii)): roughly $130 for about 15 mph over, climbing steeply the faster you go, plus fees and costs.
