How much a truck can weigh in Illinois

Illinois holds the federal line at 80,000 lb, 20,000 single, 34,000 tandem (625 ILCS 5/15-111). The fine schedule is a fixed ladder: $100 up to 2,000 lb over, $270 at 2,001-2,500, on up to $950 at 4,501-5,000, then $1,500 for the first 5,000 over plus $150 for every extra 500 lb (625 ILCS 5/15-113). Four violations in twelve months tacks on another $5,000.

Axles, off-Interstate, and permits

• Off the Interstate: 80,000 lb on Class I highways; designated Class II and local roads carry lower posted limits
• Single axle: 20,000 lb
• Tandem axle: 34,000 lb
• With a permit: No routine LCV tier. Single-trip and annual oversize/overweight permits, plus harvest-season permits, authorize weights above 80,000 lb case by case.

Posted bridge and road limits

Illinois posts bridges and local roads under 625 ILCS 5/15-316, and a posted axle or gross limit on a regulatory sign carries the same fine ladder as any overweight ticket (15-113). Posted wins over legal: a 15-ton bridge (30,000 lb) stops a legal 80,000-lb rig cold. Tons on the sign are short tons of 2,000 lb. Blowing a posted bridge is a separate violation and you can be held liable for the damage.

What running heavy costs

Fixed ladder under 625 ILCS 5/15-113: $100 up to 2,000 lb over, $270 at 2,001-2,500, $330 at 2,501-3,000, $520 at 3,001-3,500, $600 at 3,501-4,000, $850 at 4,001-4,500, $950 at 4,501-5,000. Past 5,000 over it's $1,500 for the first 5,000 plus $150 for each additional 500 lb. A 4th violation within 12 months adds $5,000. Court costs push the total higher.
