Illinois Truck Lane Restrictions
Illinois has no standalone truck-lane statute, but that does not leave the left lane open. IDOT and the Tollway post "No Trucks Left Lane" signs on most multi-lane interstates under 625 ILCS 5/11-709(c), and State Police enforce them hard - for a CDL it is a serious violation. Where a sign is up, stay out of the left lane entirely, even to pass. Where it is not, the general keep-right law (11-701) still limits the left lane to overtaking. On any 3-or-more-lane Illinois interstate, run the two right lanes.

Roads, exceptions, and signs
- Where it applies: Most 3-or-more-lane Illinois interstates and tollways carry posted "No Trucks Left Lane" signs, including the Chicago-area expressways, I-80, I-55, I-57, and the Tollway (I-90, I-88, I-294). The Kennedy and Dan Ryan express lanes are closed to trucks entirely.
- Posted. "No Trucks Left Lane" signs are common on multi-lane interstates and enforced as traffic-control devices.
- General rule: 625 ILCS 5/11-701(d) - left lane for passing only on interstates and freeways; keep right otherwise. Applies to all vehicles.
- Illinois has no standalone truck-lane statute like New Jersey or Pennsylvania - the restriction is created by posting under 11-709(c), and State Police enforce it hard against trucks. Where the left lane is unposted, the general pass-only rule (11-701) still keeps you out of it except to overtake.
What a lane violation costs
Petty offense, up to $1,000, cited under 625 ILCS 5/11-709 (improper lane usage) or 11-305 (disobeying a posted sign); a mandatory $100 to $1,000 in a work zone. For a CDL it is a "serious violation" - two in three years means disqualification.
