Ohio Rest Area & Parking Rules
Three hours, but the limit is on vehicles left unattended (Ohio Adm. Code 5501:2-4-01), and it's tow-at-your-expense past that. Stay with your truck for a federal reset and you're attended, not abandoned, so overnight rest is generally fine. Camping is banned. Ohio Turnpike plazas allow free overnight commercial parking. Limits, truck parking, and HOS rest
- Time limit: 3 hours if left unattended (Ohio Adm. Code 5501:2-4-01); no set limit while you stay with the truck
- Spaces tighten on I-70, I-80, and I-75 overnight. Ohio is a MAASTO TPIMS state, with real-time counts on dynamic signs and the 'Trucks Park Here' app/site, and the Ohio Turnpike adds 24/7 service plazas with free overnight commercial truck parking. Jason's Law flagged this corridor shortage.
- HOS exception: not addressed. The 3-hour rule targets unattended vehicles, so a driver resting in the cab isn't the target, but the code writes no explicit HOS carve-out. Dual lens: the rule reads 3 hours then tow, yet attended trucks resting overnight are routinely left alone; leave a trailer unattended and it gets towed. Weigh/inspection stations are not for overnight rest. Ohio Turnpike service plazas (a separate authority) welcome overnight commercial parking free of charge.
