Ohio Truck Idling Law
Ohio has no statewide idling rule; the limits are local and clustered in northeast Ohio. Cleveland caps idling at 5 minutes per hour (10 at a loading dock), and in cold below 32F or heat above 85F the allowance rises to 10 minutes per hour rather than being waived, with penalties that climb from a warning to a $100 fine. Garfield Heights uses a similar 5-minute rule with a $150 fine. The NE Ohio ordinances exempt sleeper-berth heat or AC during a required rest period.
When you can keep idling
- Sleeper-berth heat or AC during a required rest period (Cleveland Cod. Ord. 431.44 and other NE Ohio ordinances)
APUs and idle-reduction gear
Local rules recognize idle-reduction technology.
City and county ordinances
- Cleveland: 5 minutes per hour (10 at a loading dock); below 32F or above 85F, idling is limited to 10 minutes per 60-minute period, not waived.
- Garfield Heights: 5 minutes per hour, $150.
- Other northeast Ohio (NOACA) communities have similar rules.
