Rocky Mountain National Park concentrates 415 square miles of the Front Range into a single accessible package — sixty named peaks above 12,000 feet, a third of the park above tree line, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States. Established in 1915, it now hosts roughly 4.4 million visitors a year, the great majority entering through the gateway town of Estes Park via the Beaver Meadows Entrance. From I-25 the standard approach is Exit 243 in Loveland, dropping west onto US-34 through the spectacular Big Thompson Canyon for 36 miles. A timed-entry permit system has been in effect for late spring through early fall every year since 2020 and is expected to continue in 2026.
