01 Park overview

Rocky Mountain National Park concentrates 415 square miles of the Front Range into a single accessible package — sixty named peaks above 12,000 feet, a third of the park above tree line, and Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States. Established in 1915, it now hosts roughly 4.4 million visitors a year, the great majority entering through the gateway town of Estes Park via the Beaver Meadows Entrance. From I-25 the standard approach is Exit 243 in Loveland, dropping west onto US-34 through the spectacular Big Thompson Canyon for 36 miles. A timed-entry permit system has been in effect for late spring through early fall every year since 2020 and is expected to continue in 2026.

  • Trail Ridge Road tops out at 12,183 ft — the highest continuous paved road in the contiguous US
  • About 4.4 million visitors per year (third- or fourth-most-visited national park most years)
  • Sixty named peaks rise above 12,000 ft inside the park boundary
  • Continental Divide runs north-south through the heart of the park
  • Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976

Truck access

US-34 from I-25 to Estes Park is paved and unrestricted, but the Big Thompson Canyon stretch involves tight curves, narrow shoulders, and a 6% grade. Inside the park, Trail Ridge Road is paved end-to-end but climbs above tree line with no guardrails on long sections.

Parking: Bear Lake parking fills by 6 AM in summer — most visitors use the free shuttle from the Park & Ride. RV/oversize parking is limited; vehicles over 30 ft are restricted on Old Fall River Road and not permitted on Bear Lake Road.

Restrictions: Old Fall River Road is closed to vehicles over 25 ft and to all vehicles October–June. Bear Lake Road has length restrictions during shuttle hours.

05 Seasonality & road closures

Best months: Mid-June through September — Trail Ridge Road open, wildflower bloom, full trail access.

Closures: Trail Ridge Road (US-34 across the park) closes annually in mid-October for winter and reopens around Memorial Day, weather depending. Old Fall River Road is open July–September only.

Notes: Afternoon thunderstorms are routine June–August above tree line; aim to be off Trail Ridge by 1 PM during summer.
