Thresholds, escorts, and curfews
- Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide, 15' high (17' on the Elliott and Dalton corridors), 75' overall (53' trailer, 45' single unit), or 80,000 lb. Note the legal height is 15', not the 13'6" you see on most maps.
- Escort / pilot car: Escorts are triggered by width and length, with thresholds set on the permit. The pilot/escort must be a legal-size car or light truck, not towing, with 360-degree visibility, a roof-mounted amber beacon visible 500 feet, and OVERSIZE/WIDE LOAD/LONG LOAD signs. A vehicle needing its own permit cannot escort another load.
- Superload: Superload over 18' wide, 18' high, 150' long, or 250,000 lb. It moves under a special-load permit with engineering and route review.
- Travel curfew: Daylight only, a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, Monday through Saturday noon. No Saturday-afternoon or Sunday travel for permitted loads. Winter conditions and specific corridors can add limits written on the permit.
- Permit fee: About $25 for a single-trip permit. Annual overwidth permit $500 (to 10'6" wide); annual overlength $450 (to 85' overall, 53' trailer); annual permits can top $1,000 depending on load.
