Washington Truck Idling Law
Washington has no statewide idling time limit for trucks. A 2024 bill (SB 6304) that would have set a 5-minute limit did not pass. The one idling rule on the books is a weight break: a truck with a working APU can run up to 400 pounds over the limit (WAC 468-38-073). Check city rules before you park.
When you can keep idling
This state has no statewide idling limit, so there are no statutory exemptions to list. Local ordinances, where they exist, carry their own.
APUs and idle-reduction gear
A truck with a working APU can run up to 400 pounds over the weight limit (WAC 468-38-073).
City and county ordinances
- Some Puget Sound cities encourage idle reduction, but none enforce a fixed time limit.
