How Washington handles spring thaw

Washington has no fixed spring-thaw calendar. WSDOT posts temporary weight cuts under RCW 46.44.080 when a freeze-thaw condition threatens a state highway, with signs at each end of the segment. Most spring load limits, though, come from eastern Washington counties and cities posting reduced 'X-ton' limits on their own roads. Interstates stay at full legal weight. Window, reduction, and where to check

• Season: No fixed statewide window. WSDOT restricts state-highway segments as freeze-thaw conditions require, and eastern Washington counties post spring load limits roughly March through April. Each restriction is declared and lifted by road condition, so the dates move every year.
• Reduction: A temporary cut to the legal axle and gross weight on the posted segment, with the amount shown on the order or sign. Counties commonly sign reduced 'X-ton' seasonal limits on their own roads. No single statewide percentage.
• Interstates: Exempt from the seasonal reduction
• Find the current order: WSDOT commercial-vehicle route restrictions and the real-time truck restriction map (wsdot.wa.gov). For local roads, check the specific county or city public-works office for its spring load posting.
• Overweight penalty: $150 minimum for running over a posted seasonal limit (RCW 46.44.105(2)), and on a second violation within 12 months involving the same power unit the court suspends your certificate of license registration for at least 30 days. The per-pound overweight scale in RCW 46.44.105(1)(b) reaches only the statutory weight limits, not a posted seasonal limit.
