Iowa Tire Chain Laws
Iowa has no chain law for trucks. Chains are permitted, not required (Iowa Code 321.442). You may run chains of reasonable proportion when snow or ice would make you skid, and studs or ice grips are legal only November 1 through April 1. No DOT posts R-1, R-2, or Chains Required here. Misusing tire equipment is a $30 scheduled fine (805.8A). Watch I-80 in a blizzard and check 511 Iowa.

When, where, and what counts
- When required: Chains are optional. There is no seasonal activation and no chain-control system. Iowa DOT never posts R-1/R-2/R-3 or 'Chains Required' signs. You may run chains any time snow or ice would make a vehicle skid. Studs and ice grips are legal only November 1 through April 1.
- Where: No mandate anywhere. Voluntary traction on wind-scoured I-80, I-35, and US 20 during blizzards. Iowa has no mountain passes and no chain-control corridors.
- Applies to: No CMV chain mandate and no weight threshold. The tire-equipment statute applies to all vehicles equally, and only when a driver chooses to run chains.
- Chains vs traction devices: Chains of reasonable proportion are allowed (Iowa Code 321.442); cable chains qualify. Studs and ice grips are permitted only Nov 1 to Apr 1 and may project no more than 1/16 inch. No device is mandated, so AutoSock is neither required nor barred.
- Check the live order: 511 Iowa (511ia.org) for live road and travel conditions. Iowa issues no chain-control order to look up.
- Fine: No chain-up fine, because chains aren't required. An improper tire/projection equipment violation under 321.442 carries a $30 scheduled fine plus the statutory surcharge (Iowa Code 805.8A(3)).
