Iowa Tire Chain Laws

Iowa has no chain law for trucks. Chains are permitted, not required (Iowa Code 321.442). You may run chains of reasonable proportion when snow or ice would make you skid, and studs or ice grips are legal only November 1 through April 1. No DOT posts R-1, R-2, or Chains Required here. Does Iowa have a tire chain law?
No. Iowa has no commercial chain mandate; chains are allowed for safety but not required. Iowa has no chain law for trucks.
When are chains required in Iowa?
Chains are optional. There is no seasonal activation and no chain-control system. Iowa DOT never posts R-1/R-2/R-3 or 'Chains Required' signs. You may run chains any time snow or ice would make a vehicle skid. Studs and ice grips are legal only November 1 through April 1.
Where do Iowa's chain requirements apply?
No mandate anywhere. Voluntary traction on wind-scoured I-80, I-35, and US 20 during blizzards. Iowa has no mountain passes and no chain-control corridors.
Does Iowa accept AutoSock or alternative traction devices?
Chains of reasonable proportion are allowed (Iowa Code 321.442); cable chains qualify. Studs and ice grips are permitted only Nov 1 to Apr 1 and may project no more than 1/16 inch. No device is mandated, so AutoSock is neither required nor barred.
