Iowa Studded Tire Law
Run studs or inserted ice grips November 1 to April 1, projecting no more than 1/16 inch past the tread (Iowa Code 321.442). No weight cap, so a loaded truck can legally stud up in season; school buses and fire apparatus get studs year-round. Outside that window studs are a simple misdemeanor equipment violation. Iowa has no chain mandate, and studded tires do not count as chains if conditions turn bad.

The window and winter-tire rules
- Season: November 1 to April 1 (Iowa Code 321.442). School buses and fire-department emergency apparatus may run studs any time of year.
- No M+S/3PMSF traction-tire law and no mandatory chain law; chains are permitted for safety when roads ice up. Studs are not chains and do not satisfy any traction requirement or chain order. See the Iowa chain-law page.
