Delaware Tire Chain Laws
Delaware has no chain mandate. Chains of reasonable proportions are legal when snow or ice makes you slide, and studded tires are allowed October 15 to April 15 (21 Del. C. § 4302). No pass, corridor, or sign flips a chain requirement on. Drive to the conditions on I-95 and Route 1, slow down, and stop when you lose traction. Carry chains for states that post them.

When, where, and what counts
- When required: Never mandated. Chains are optional and legal when snow, ice, or other conditions make you slide. Studded tires are permitted October 15 to April 15. No sign or order activates a chain requirement.
- Where: No mandate anywhere. Delaware is flat and coastal. Voluntary traction is most useful on I-95, SR 1, and US 13 during a storm.
- Applies to: All vehicles may run chains for safety; none are required. No CMV or weight threshold applies.
- Chains vs traction devices: Chains of reasonable proportions are permitted (21 Del. C. § 4302). Cable chains and textile traction devices like AutoSock are legal to run. Studded tires are allowed October 15 to April 15. Nothing is required.
- Check the live order: DelDOT (deldot.gov) or 511 for road and weather conditions. No chain-control status exists.
- Fine: None for chains. Chains are optional, so there is no chain-up penalty.
