Wyoming Truck Weight Limits
Wyoming runs its own bridge formula on the Interstate and will permit up to 117,000 pounds there, well above the 80,000 base (Wyo. Stat. 31-18-802). Exceptional permits reach about 160,000 pounds on designated routes for non-divisible superloads. Fines start at $25 for the first 2,000 over. Past 20,000 over you pay $1,000 plus $200 for every additional 1,000 pounds (Wyo. Stat. 31-18-805).

Axles, off-Interstate, and permits
- Off the Interstate: 80,000 lb on primary and secondary roads; higher by permit and axle spacing
- Single axle: 20,000 lb
- Tandem axle: 36,000 lb (state); triple axle up to 42,000 lb
- With a permit: 117,000 lb on the Interstate; exceptional/superload permits up to about 160,000 lb on designated routes (single 25,000, tandem 55,000, tridem 65,000)
- Wyoming's Interstate single/tandem run 20,000/36,000 under its state bridge formula. The 117,000-lb Interstate figure is Wyoming's grandfathered ceiling (23 CFR 658 App. C). The ~160,000-lb superload figure is from WYDOT-oriented permit sources and is medium confidence; confirm with the WYDOT Bridge Program per route.
Posted bridge and road limits
WYDOT and local authorities post bridges with MUTCD 'WEIGHT LIMIT X TONS' signs; tons are 2,000-pound short tons. A posted limit overrides the legal and permit maximums. If a bridge is posted under your weight, you route around it. Crossing an overweight-posted bridge is its own offense, separate from a routine highway-overweight ticket, and can expose you to repair liability.
What running heavy costs
Graduated by excess weight (Wyo. Stat. 31-18-805). 0-2,000 over $25; 2,001-4,000 $75; 4,001-6,000 $125; 6,001-8,000 $150; 8,001-10,000 $200; 10,001-12,000 $300; 12,001-14,000 $400; 14,001-16,000 $500; 16,001-18,000 $600; 18,001-20,000 $700; more than 20,000 over $1,000 plus $200 for each additional 1,000 lb or fraction. Court costs and fees are added to the amount collected, so posted deposit schedules run higher than the base fine.
