South Carolina Truck Weight Limits

Standard limit is 80,000 pounds, 20,000 on a single axle, 34,000 on a tandem (S.C. Code 56-5-4130). Overweight fines climb by the pound: 4 cents from 500 to 3,500 over, 6 cents up to 6,000 over, 10 cents past that (S.C. Code 56-5-4160). Run more than 25% over legal and the fine doubles; over 50% and it triples. Route permits can take you up to roughly 130,000 pounds.

03 Posted signs

Posted bridge and road limits

Bridges and local roads post MUTCD 'WEIGHT LIMIT X TONS' signs (short tons). The posted limit overrides the legal max. Crossing a posted bridge over the limit, even slightly, adds a separate fine up to $1,000 and/or up to 30 days, treated as reckless endangerment, plus liability if the structure is damaged.

WEIGHTLIMIT10TONS
A posted limit overrides your legal max. "Tons" on a sign means short tons of 2,000 lb, so WEIGHT LIMIT 10 TONS = 20,000 lb. Even if you are legal at 80,000, you cannot cross a bridge or road posted below your gross weight. Some signs post separate single / tandem / combination limits. Ignore one and you are into overweight-on-a-posted-structure territory, which is a steeper, separate charge.
04 Overweight fine

What running heavy costs

S.C. Code 56-5-4160 charges per pound on the excess: 500-3,500 lb over, 4 cents/lb; 3,501-6,000 lb over, 6 cents/lb; more than 6,000 lb over, 10 cents/lb. The fine doubles when gross exceeds the legal limit by 25-50%, and triples above 50%. Only one citation per load, charged on the greater of the gross or axle overage. Minimum fines run from about $100 (first offense) to $1,000 (third).
