New Jersey Truck Bans & Hazmat Routes

Two roads bite in New Jersey. The Palisades Interstate Parkway bans every commercial vehicle top to bottom, and the Garden State Parkway shuts out anything over 10,000 lb GVWR north of Interchange 105. Signs say 'No Commercial Vehicles,' so a plated van counts. Cross the Hudson with propane or hazmat and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels are closed to you; take the George Washington Bridge instead.

New Jersey Truck Route FAQ

Are there roads that ban trucks in New Jersey?
Yes. The Palisades Interstate Parkway bans all commercial vehicles end to end, in both NJ and NY (Palisades Interstate Park Commission). The Garden State Parkway bans commercial vehicles over 10,000 lb GVWR north of Interchange 105 (N.J.A.C. 19:9-1.9, NJ Turnpike Authority). Trucks that fit run south of 105 and on the truck-legal Turnpike, but the northern GSP and the whole Palisades are off-limits. Two roads bite in New Jersey.
What are the hazmat restrictions in New Jersey?
Into New York, the Holland and Lincoln tunnels ban propane and flammable/hazardous cargo; placarded hazmat crosses on the George Washington Bridge (PANYNJ). On the New Jersey Turnpike, placarded loads follow the posted hazmat routing and interchange limits. Default to the Interstate and any state-designated route under 49 CFR 397.
What is the fine for a truck on a banned road in New Jersey?
Driving a banned commercial vehicle on the Garden State or Palisades parkway draws a summons and fine, and troopers can turn you around at the next exit. NJTA and Palisades Commission rules set the penalty; exact amounts vary by court, so expect a moving-violation fine in the low hundreds plus any towing.
