Which lanes a truck can use in Tennessee

Tennessee has no blanket left-lane truck ban. TDOT can post signs putting truck tractors and semitrailers in specific lanes on interstates and divided highways with three or more lanes each way (T.C.A. 55-8-195). Where those signs are up, follow them except when you are passing. A ticket is a Class C misdemeanor, up to $50. The general keep-right rule (55-8-115) applies to everyone.

Roads, exceptions, and signs

• Where it applies: Interstates and multilane divided highways with 3+ lanes each way. Posted segments only, not statewide.
• Signed. The truck-lane restriction exists only where TDOT has posted lane-designation signs.
• General rule: T.C.A. 55-8-115(b). Slower-than-normal traffic keeps right except to pass or turn left. Applies to all vehicles.
• The truck-specific authority is 55-8-195, carried out through TDOT rule 1680-02-05. Section 55-8-115(b) is the separate general keep-right rule that applies to all vehicles. Older aggregators lump both under 55-8-115.
