New Jersey Truck Lane Restrictions

New Jersey keeps trucks of 10,000 pounds or more out of the far-left lane on any road with three or more lanes each way (N.J.S.A. 39:4-88). The fine runs $100 to $300 plus a $50 surcharge. You can use the lane only to prepare for a left turn or a left-side exit, and only within a mile of it. On the Turnpike, Parkway, and A.C. Expressway the Authority goes further and keeps trucks out of the two left lanes where there are four or more (N.J.A.C. 19:9-1.9).

Can a truck drive in the left lane in New Jersey?
Not as a cruising lane. Truck-specific: a truck of 10,000 lbs registered gross weight or more may not be driven in the farthest-left lane on a roadway with three or more lanes in the same direction. Exceptions: preparing for a left turn (up to one mile), entering or leaving the road from the left lane (up to one mile), or reacting to emergency conditions such as poor visibility, snow, accidents, or emergency vehicles.. See N.J.S.A. 39:4-88(e). You may still use it to pass, turn left, or when directed.
