Which lanes a truck can use in Kentucky

Kentucky keeps truck tractors, trailers, and semitrailers out of the far-left lane on any highway with three or more lanes running your direction (KRS 189.340). You can use it to get on or off the highway, to let merging traffic in, or when the right lanes are not safe. The fine runs $20 to $100. A separate rule keeps all vehicles out of the left lane on 65-mph, four-lane limited-access roads except to pass.

Roads, exceptions, and signs

• Where it applies: Any highway with 3+ lanes in the same direction, statewide. Applies by law, not tied to posted signs.
• Statutory. Applies by law, no sign required.
• General rule: Separate KRS 189.340(7): all vehicles must stay out of the left lane of a four-or-more-lane limited-access highway posted at 65 mph or higher, except to pass, yield to entering traffic, or when the right lanes are unsafe.
• KRS 189.340 holds both the truck-specific 3+ lane rule and the general 4-lane/65-mph left-lane rule for all vehicles. They are distinct provisions.
