Which lanes a truck can use in Kansas

Kansas has no truck-specific left-lane ban, but it does have a real keep-right rule (K.S.A. 8-1522). On a rural highway with three or more lanes each way, no vehicle may run in the far-left lane except to pass or turn left. That covers cars and trucks the same. The uniform fine is $75, and it doubles in a work zone. Stay right, use the left lane to pass, then move over.

Roads, exceptions, and signs

• Where it applies: Statewide. The far-left-lane rule applies on rural (outside-city-limits) highways with 3+ lanes each direction. Emergency, law enforcement, Kansas Turnpike Authority, and KDOT construction/maintenance vehicles are exempt. No metro truck-lane routing.
• General rule: K.S.A. 8-1522(c)-(d) - stay within a single lane; on rural highways with three or more lanes each way, keep out of the far-left lane except to pass or turn left.
• Kansas is stricter than a plain slow-vehicle state: its 3+-lane far-left rule bars any vehicle from the far-left lane except to pass, but it is not truck-specific. Fine doubles in work zones.

What a lane violation costs

$75 uniform fine under the statewide fine schedule (K.S.A. 8-2118), plus court costs. Doubles in a posted road construction zone.
