Running studs in Florida

Metal studs are illegal in Florida for every vehicle, in every month (Fla. Stat. §316.299, "Rough surfaced wheels prohibited"). The statute bars sharpened or roughened wheel surfaces and allows only roughened pneumatic rubber tires with studs that don't materially injure the highway. So rubber/soft studs pass, metal doesn't, with no weight cap and no out-of-state pass-through. A violation is a noncriminal nonmoving infraction. Florida has no winter-tire or chain-control law.

The window and winter-tire rules

• Season: Metal studs prohibited year-round. Only roughened pneumatic rubber tires with studs that don't materially injure the pavement are allowed (Fla. Stat. §316.299).
• Florida has no winter-tire or chain-control law — snow and ice barely factor into its equipment rules. Rubber or non-damaging studs are the only traction studs allowed; metal is out for every vehicle regardless of GVW. There's no chain order to satisfy — just keep legal tread depth (49 CFR 393.75). No out-of-state carve-out from the metal-stud ban.
