New York Oversize & Overweight Permits
Run under 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb and the length caps and you need nothing. Break one and NYSDOT permits under 17 NYCRR Part 154, the rules VTL §385 authorizes. On paper it's weekday daylight travel. The real snag is local desks: New York City runs its own permit and hours, and towns bolt on rush-hour bans. Over 12' wide pulls a front escort on two-lane roads; a superload buys a route survey and about two weeks of waiting.

Thresholds, escorts, and curfews
- Legal max before a permit: No permit up to 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb, and within legal length (53' trailer on designated highways; 48' trailer / 65' overall elsewhere, on the Thruway, and in NYC). Width drops to 8' in NYC and on lanes under 10' wide. Over any one of those and you file an OS/OW permit before you roll.
- Escort / pilot car: No escort under 12' wide, 80' long, and 14' high. On two-lane roads, one front escort once you top 12' wide, 80' long, or 14' high; a rear escort covers those same triggers on roads of more than two lanes; an over-height load's lead car carries a height pole. Over 16' wide, over 160' long, 16' high or more, or over 200,000 lb pulls police. NYC and the Thruway make their own escort calls.
- Superload: Over 16' wide, 16' or more high, over 160' long, or 200,000 lb or more gross. Expect a physical route survey and roughly two weeks of lead time for approval.
- Travel curfew: Daylight only, Monday-Friday, half-hour before sunrise to half-hour after sunset. No weekend or holiday moves without special permission. Local desks stack on top: New York City issues its own permit through NYCDOT with its own hours, and some towns bolt on their own rush-hour bans on wide or long loads.
- Permit fee: Single-trip starts around $40 and rises with size and weight; annual/blanket permits can top $900 depending on the size band.
