Base fee runs $10 plus size and weight add-ons, a $12 transaction fee, and 5%. Daylight only, seven days, but killed under 500-foot visibility or bad roads. The toll roads bite: no Turnpike, Parkway, Route 495, or Holland Tunnel without special permission. Notify the county, the town, and the utilities before wide moves.

Thresholds, escorts, and curfews

• Legal max before a permit: No permit up to 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb, and within legal length. Over any one of those and NJDOT permits the move through its SUPERLOAD online system before you travel.
• Escort / pilot car: NJDOT commonly calls one escort over 14' wide and two over 16'; over 14' high one; length over 100' one, over 120' two. Some routes trigger an escort at 12' wide. Notify NJDOT, the county and municipal traffic engineers, and the utilities before wide moves. Front escort holds 200-500 ft ahead, rear 100-250 ft back.
• Superload: Big non-divisible loads route through NJDOT's SUPERLOAD system, and loads beyond the routine size and weight bands draw bridge and structural review before a permit issues. NJDOT does not publish a single clean superload dimension; confirm the current engineering-review threshold with the permit office before the haul.
• Travel curfew: Daylight only, seven days a week; sunset-to-sunrise travel is off. The permit dies when visibility drops under 500 feet or roads turn hazardous. No major-holiday moves. The toll network is off-limits without special permission: Route 495, the Holland Tunnel, the NJ Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, and the Atlantic City Expressway.
• Permit fee: $10 base permit fee plus charges for excess size and weight, a $12 transaction fee, and a 5% service charge. Annual and blanket options exist for repeat runs.
