Thresholds, escorts, and curfews
- Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb gross, or the legal length for your combination. MDOT's Office of Enforcement issues the permit.
- Escort / pilot car: Over 12'11" wide: one escort; over 16' wide: two. Over 10' wide moving at night: one escort. Length over 95': one escort (two on some routes); over 105': two. Height over 15'7": a high-pole escort. Rear overhang of 15' or more: permit plus front and/or rear escort.
- Superload: Superload once you hit 17' wide, 121' long, 15'7" high, or 189,999 lb gross. Routine permits cap at 16' wide. Over 15'7" high you owe a route survey and utility-company letters before MDOT will approve the move.
- Travel curfew: A half hour after sunrise to a half hour before sunset, Monday through Saturday, no Sunday travel. Loads within 12' wide, 13'6" high, 99' long, 150,000 lb, and 4' rear overhang now get 24/7 movement, Sunday included. No travel after noon before or on the major holidays: New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
- Permit fee: Single-trip oversize permit $10. Overweight is $0.05 per mile for each 1,000 lb over 80,000 lb. Annual blanket oversize-width permit $100; annual blanket oversize-length permit $100.
