- Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb gross (20,000 lb single, 34,000 lb tandem, 51,000 lb tridem), or over a 53' trailer / the legal overall length. Permits come from the Indiana DOR's Motor Carrier Services, not INDOT's road side.
- Escort / pilot car: Width: one pilot car over 12'4"; over 14'4" up to 17' one on divided highways or two on other roads; front and rear police escorts over 17'. Height: pole car over 14'6", add a bucket truck over 15' off the Interstate. Weight: Indiana State Police escort over 200,000 lb (waived on all-interstate routes with no slowdowns under 250,000 lb).
- Superload: Superload when you top 16' wide, 15' high, 110' long, or 200,000 lb gross. That draws route and structure analysis, engineering review, and the tightest 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekday travel window, with added lead time.
- Travel curfew: Up to 110' long, 10' wide, 13'6" high and under 200,000 lb can run 24/7. Over 110' long, 10'-14'4" wide, up to 15' high move a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. 14'4"-16' wide is Monday-Friday daylight. Over 16' wide, 15' high or 200,000 lb usually 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Holiday no-move applies.
- Permit fee: Oversize single-trip $20 (up to 95'/12'4"/13'6"), $30 (to 110'/16'/15'), $40 above that. Overweight single-trip $20 plus about $0.35-$1.00 per mile. Annual oversize permit $405; annual sealed ocean-container permit $800. Add $10 per bridge crossed and $3 per amendment.
