When Georgia needs a permit

Over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, or 80,000 lb, buy a GDOT permit, single-trip from about $30 and good for 10 days. Escorts start at 12' wide and a height pole rides over 15'6". Daylight only, and inside Atlanta's I-285 loop nothing moves 6-9 a.m. or 4-6 p.m. on weekdays. Weight splits into two tiers: over 150,000 lb is a Superload ($125), over 180,000 lb a Superload Plus ($500), both with bridge review.

Thresholds, escorts, and curfews

• Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb gross, or beyond legal length.
• Escort / pilot car: Width over 12' up to 14'8": one rear escort or amber light on interstates, two escorts on two-lanes. Height over 15'6": front escort with a height pole. Length 75-100' a rear escort/amber light, 100-125' a rear escort vehicle, over 125' front and rear.
• Superload: Three tiers, and width and height count too. Superload at $125 covers 150,001 to 180,000 lb or any width or height over 16', and takes up to three days to approve. Superload Plus at $500 covers weight over 180,000 lb and needs a bridge analysis, up to three weeks. Mega Load at $500 starts at 300,000 lb and up, needs outside engineering, and GDOT asks for at least 30 business days from the engineering firm's submittal.
• Travel curfew: Daylight only, 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, and movement is allowed Monday through Sunday, though larger loads are held off weekends and holidays. Inside Atlanta's I-285 perimeter, no permit movement 6-9 a.m. or 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
• Permit fee: Single-trip permit from about $30. Superload $125; Superload Plus $500. Annual permits available for repeat runs. Permits typically valid 10 days.
