Florida Oversize & Overweight Permits
Over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, or 80,000 lb, you need an FDOT permit. The handy part: you can self-issue a trip permit through PAS up to 16' wide, 18' high, 150' long, and 200,000 lb. Past that it's a superload application with engineering. One escort past 12' wide or 14'6" high; a law-enforcement escort on the widest loads, past about 15' wide or 16' high. Rush-hour bans hit Hillsborough and Dade, plus major-holiday no-move dates.

Thresholds, escorts, and curfews
- Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide (8' on roads not on the national network with lanes under 12' wide), 13'6" high, 80,000 lb gross, or over legal length.
- Escort / pilot car: One private escort if width over 12', height over 14'6", or a long load. Step up toward a law-enforcement escort plus a qualified escort on the widest and tallest loads, past about 15' wide or 16' high. Loads over 15' high need a route survey.
- Superload: You can self-issue a trip permit through FDOT's PAS up to 16' wide, 18' high, 150' long, and 200,000 lb (140,000 lb self-propelled). Past any of those it's a superload application with engineering review and route analysis.
- Travel curfew: Wide loads run daylight only. Metro rush-hour bans in Hillsborough and Dade counties, 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. No movement of loads over 14'6" high, 80 ft long, or 10 ft wide on major holidays (New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas).
- Permit fee: Overdimension trip permits run about $5 to $45 by size; annual blanket permits run higher. Overweight fees are separate. Blanket and route-specific permits cover qualifying repeat runs.
