Thresholds, escorts, and curfews
- Legal max before a permit: Permit needed over 8'6" wide, 13'6" high, 80,000 lb gross, or over legal length (53 ft semitrailer), per Chapter 45 of Title 21. DelDOT issues online, and the permit is valid 5 days.
- Escort / pilot car: Width over 13' takes one escort (rear on a multi-lane highway, front on a two-lane); over 14' one front and one rear; over 15' front, rear, and Delaware State Police. Length over 90' takes one rear escort; at 100' one front and one rear; at 120' front, rear, and State Police. Height at 15' takes one front and one rear, and at 17'6" adds State Police. Weight over 120,000 lb takes one front, one rear, and State Police (DelDOT OS/OW Policy Table 4.1).
- Superload: Superload at 120 ft or longer, 15 ft wide, 15 ft high, or 120,000 lb gross or more. Delaware State Police escort comes in at that length or width, and DelDOT reviews the route and structures before issuing.
- Travel curfew: Sunrise to sunset, Monday through Sunday, with no half hour of grace at either end (DelDOT OS/OW Policy 4.2.1). Weekends are open; holidays are what close the road, and Memorial Day and Labor Day close from the Friday before through the Tuesday after, Thanksgiving from the Wednesday before through the following Monday. A load within 75' long, 12' wide, 14'6" high and 120,000 lb may request a 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. run Monday through Friday with prior approval. Superloads keep the sunrise to sunset window but should avoid 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. From May 15 through October 1, any load that cannot stay within 10 mph of the posted speed is barred from the main New Castle, Kent and Sussex routes between noon Friday and noon Monday.
- Permit fee: Single-trip is $30 plus $10 for each 8,000 lb over legal weight. Superload is $60 plus $10 per 8,000 lb over. Permits are valid 5 days. Annual/blanket options are available.
