What Louisiana makes you run

Louisiana keeps it broad. Every motor vehicle except motorcycles must run fenders, covers, flaps, splash aprons or fender flares at least as wide as the tires (RS 32:364). The one flap line in RS 32:384 is narrow: in a triple saddle mount of four truck-tractors, the second, third and fourth units need adequate splash guards or mud flaps on their trailing rear wheels (RS 32:384(C)(2)). No inch-clearance is set, so State Police judge whether spray is controlled. Ag and forestry haulers, sub-1,500-pound rigs, and vehicles never built with the gear are exempt. Expect a correctable equipment ticket, not an out-of-service.

• Ground clearance: No set clearance. RS 32:364 only requires the device effectively minimize rear spray and run at least the width of the tires. The only flap language in RS 32:384 is narrow: in a triple saddle mount of four truck-tractors, the rear wheels of the second, third and fourth units need adequate splash guards or mud flaps (RS 32:384(C)(2)). It sets no trailer flap rule.
• Fine: Handled under the general traffic-equipment penalty (RS 32:57); a low-dollar, correctable citation.
