Who you move over for, and the fallback
- Move over for: Emergency response areas with police, fire, EMS, tow, and other responders showing lights, plus any disabled vehicle displaying hazard lights, road flares, or caution signs.
- If you can't move over: Move over to a lane not next to the response area. If that's impossible, illegal, or unsafe, slow to no more than 20 mph below the posted limit.
- Known as Ted's Law. License suspensions run longer, up to a year, if you seriously injure or kill a responder or a person in or near a disabled vehicle. Fines also double for other violations committed in a manned response area.
What a violation costs
