Who you move over for, and the fallback
- Move over for: Police, fire, EMS, tow, utility, and sanitation/maintenance vehicles. Since Jan 1, 2025 it also covers ANY disabled vehicle stopped with hazard lights, emergency flares, posted emergency signage, or a person visibly present. A flat tire counts.
- If you can't move over: On a multi-lane road, vacate the lane closest to the stopped vehicle. If you can't move over, slow to 20 mph below the posted limit, or to 5 mph if the limit is 20 mph or less.
- Expanded effective Jan 1, 2025 to cover any disabled/stationary vehicle showing hazard lights, flares, or signage. Exact dollar total varies by county surcharges.
What a violation costs
Noncriminal moving violation. Base fine about $60, roughly $120-$160 with mandatory court costs, plus 3 points on your license. Penalties climb if you cause a crash or injury.
