Rhode Island Truck Idling Law
Rhode Island caps unnecessary idling at 5 minutes in any 60-minute period (Air Pollution Control Regulation 45). Exemptions cover traffic, fuel deliveries, repairs, and auxiliary equipment. Heat or AC for occupant health and safety is exempt, but idling for heat is limited to 15 minutes per hour when it is between 0F and 32F, and is unlimited only below 0F (250-RICR-120-05-45.8(A)(2)). Fines run up to $100 for a first offense and up to $500 after.
