How Utah handles spring thaw

Utah runs no statewide UDOT spring-thaw program, so the Interstates and main state highways hold normal limits through the thaw. The catch is local: a county or city can post its own rural or mountain road with a spring weight limit (Utah Code 72-7-408), and that roadside sign is the legal limit. An overweight permit can also carry a seasonal condition. Check the sign and your permit, and confirm each season.

Window, reduction, and where to check

• Season: No statewide UDOT spring-thaw program. If a limit hits you it is a local city or county posting its own rural or mountain road as it thaws, roughly March into May, and those dates are set locally and change every year.
• Reduction: No statewide percentage or tonnage cut. A county or city that posts its own road sets the number on the sign, and an overweight permit can carry its own seasonal condition. Read the posted sign and your permit.
• Interstates: Exempt from the seasonal reduction
• Find the current order: UDOT lists highway and seasonal-road restrictions at connect.udot.utah.gov. For a back road, check with the county or city road department. The posted roadside sign is the legal limit even when the state map shows nothing.
• Overweight penalty: Standard Utah overweight penalty; Utah Code 72-7-404 carries minimum mandatory fines, assessed on the pounds over the posted limit.
