How to Bypass Weigh Stations: Legal Apps vs. Risking It

Understand how weigh station bypass systems like PrePass and Drivewyze work, and the severe penalties for illegally dodging scales.

How to Bypass Weigh Stations: Legal Apps vs.Risking It

Every trucker loves seeing the green light on their transponder.Weigh stations eat up Hours of Service(HOS), burn fuel, and increase anxiety over random Level 1 inspections.

But how do you legally bypass them, and what happens if you try to cheat the system ?

The Legal Way: Electronic Bypass Systems

There are primarily two main players in the electronic bypass game:

1. PrePass

PrePass uses a physical transponder mounted on your windshield(RFID technology). As you approach a participating weigh station, the system reads your transponder, queries your carrier’s safety rating and inspection history, and verifies the truck's weight via weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors embedded in the highway.

- Pros: 99.9 % reliability.Works even in areas with terrible cell service.

  • Cons: Requires physical hardware installation.

2. Drivewyze

Drivewyze operates entirely as a software application on your mobile phone, tablet, or ELD.It uses GPS geofencing instead of physical transponders.

  • Pros: No hardware needed.Integrates directly into most ELDs(Platform Science, KeepTruckin, etc.).
  • Cons: Dependent on cellular data.If you lose service near a scale, you won't get the bypass signal.

Which is better ? It depends on your carrier. Many large fleets run both simultaneously to maximize bypass opportunities.

The Illegal Way: "Dodging the Scales"

Some drivers attempt to bypass scales by taking off - ramps just before the weigh station and taking backroads to the next on - ramp. Do not do this.

1. Local Law Enforcement: Highway Patrol and local police are well aware of all the "sneak routes" around weigh stations. They frequently set up portable DOT scales on these exact backroads.

2. The Penalties: Intentionally bypassing a weigh station is a serious offense.Fines vary by state but can range from several hundred to over a thousand dollars.More importantly, it almost guarantees a Level 1 DOT inspection on the side of the road and a severe hit to your(and your carrier's) CSA safety score.

The Bottom Line: Keep your equipment legal, drive safely to maintain a good carrier ISS score, and let Drivewyze or PrePass do the heavy lifting.
