35.5 Billion in Tariff Refunds Now Processing for Importers
Key Details The Trump administration is distributing over $35.5 billion in tariff refunds through a new online government portal. The Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries system launched April 20 and has already validated nearly 87,000 of 126,000 received declarations as of May 11. The Treasury Department is now issuing payments that include interest on duties across more than 8 million import entries. Why It Matters The Supreme Court ruled in February that President Trump unlawfully imposed tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This decision opened the door for importers to reclaim $166 billion in overturned duties. Early refund payments have already started reaching importers, arriving sooner than expected. What's Next Customs and Border Protection has reprocessed over 8.3 million accepted entries to remove IEEPA duties. However, the current phase can only handle claims for about two-thirds of affected import entries. Approximately 1,880 consolidated refunds remain pending because importers haven't yet provided bank account information. CBP has not yet announced a timeline for future phases covering the remaining entries with more complex circumstances.
