Freightliner's Detroit Assurance Gets Intersection and Turn Safety Upgrades
Key Details Freightliner is rolling out enhanced safety features for its Detroit Assurance suite, launching with 2027 Cascadia models. The Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6) system now includes Cross Traffic Assist and upgraded Active Side Guard Assist 2 with left-turn protection, addressing two of the most dangerous driving scenarios for commercial trucks. Why It Matters Intersections and turning maneuvers present unique challenges for heavy-duty drivers, with limited visibility and unpredictable traffic patterns creating collision risks. These new technologies use radar sensors and cameras to monitor blind spots and detect hazards before they become emergencies. How It Works Cross Traffic Assist monitors vehicles crossing the truck's path at intersections, providing visual and audible alerts with optional automatic braking. The enhanced side guard system now watches for oncoming traffic during left turns, can alert drivers, and apply braking to help prevent collisions before they occur. The Full Picture Detroit Assurance with ABA6 combines four short-range radars, one long-range radar, and a camera system providing 270-degree monitoring around the truck and trailer. Freightliner emphasizes these systems assist professional drivers rather than replace their judgment and expertise on the road.
