Volvo and AVI-SPL launch autonomous freight service on Dallas-Houston route
AVI-SPL has started commercial driverless freight operations between Dallas and Houston using Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks powered by Aurora Driver technology, according to FreightWaves. The electronics and recycling company is hauling time-sensitive, high-value shipments including audio-visual equipment and materials from its electronic waste recovery program. The move addresses persistent industry challenges. Freight demand remains elevated while carriers struggle with driver shortages and limited capacity. Autonomous trucks can help reduce transit times and improve service reliability for shippers who need guaranteed schedules. Volvo Autonomous Solutions provides the complete system: the purpose-built vehicle, the autonomous driving software, required infrastructure, operations support, uptime guarantees, and fleet management software to coordinate shipments and logistics. Sasko Cuklev, head of on-road solutions at Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said the collaboration demonstrates how autonomous transport reduces transit times and meets demands for time-sensitive freight. For the trucking sector, this deployment signals that autonomous technology is moving beyond testing into actual revenue-generating routes. As operations scale, the companies expect benefits in uptime, asset utilization, and cargo security. The Dallas-Houston corridor represents one of the busiest freight lanes in the country, making it a significant test case for autonomous capability in high-traffic commercial environments.
