FMCSA Chief Pledges Tougher Enforcement Against Unsafe Carriers
Key Details FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs addressed trucking industry leaders at the American Trucking Associations' Mid-Year Management Session in Hollywood, Florida on May 20. He emphasized that responsible carriers are essential partners in identifying unsafe operators and strengthening safety standards across the industry. Why It Matters Barrs highlighted that over 20,000 unsafe drivers have already been removed from service through enforcement efforts. The agency is also cracking down on fraud in driver training and licensing, removing thousands of noncompliant training providers. These actions directly protect professional drivers and legitimate trucking companies from being undercut by bad actors. Stepping Up Enforcement FMCSA is modernizing its registration platform to prevent unsafe operators from entering the market and improve early detection of high-risk carriers. The agency is also targeting so-called chameleon carriers that evade enforcement by reconstituting under new identities. Barrs stated the agency is working with federal and state partners, including the Department of Transportation's Office of Inspector General, to investigate and prosecute fraud. Long-Term Solutions Barrs stressed that the agency is focused on fundamental fixes rather than temporary measures. He noted that supporting the trucking industry means enforcing rules fairly and consistently, not looking the other way. Stronger partnerships between regulators and responsible carriers remain critical to removing unsafe drivers and improving overall safety outcomes.
