CSX Slashes Barr Yard Operations, Shifts Work to Partner Railroads
Key Details CSX has drastically reduced operations at Barr Yard in Riverdale, Illinois, shifting most switching work to Belt Railway of Chicago and Indiana Harbor Belt. The major terminal's daily inventory has plummeted from 1,400-1,800 cars to just 228 cars, with switching operations now handled by BRC's Clearing Yard and IHB's Blue Island Yard. Why It Matters The railroad says the consolidation improves network efficiency and reduces transit times by eliminating redundant processing. However, the changes have sparked union pushback, with a dozen two-person yard jobs eliminated over the weekend. SMART-TD union leaders argue the move violates collective bargaining agreements that guarantee union members exclusive switching rights in Chicago. Network Changes CSX eliminated a daily transfer job to Canadian National's Kirk Yard in Gary and cancelled the merchandise train pair M326/M327 that ran to Grand Rapids. Traffic is now rerouted through Garrett, Indiana; Toledo, Ohio; and Detroit instead of processing through Barr. Next Steps CSX spokesman Austin Staton says the company is monitoring performance closely to ensure minimal disruption. Union officials have pledged to fight what they consider unfair labor practices, setting up a potential contract dispute.
