Chinese Logistics Giant Opens UK Cargo Hub at East Midlands
Key Details YunExpress, a Chinese cross-border e-commerce logistics company, has opened a 75,300-square-foot terminal at East Midlands Airport in the UK. The facility becomes the first Chinese-owned cargo operation at the airport and begins processing shipments this week with Central Airlines widebody freighter flights. Why It Matters Controlling its own cargo handling allows YunExpress to streamline the plane-to-warehouse-to-truck process without relying on third-party handlers. This direct control accelerates e-commerce deliveries across Europe and builds the company's integrated logistics network. The operation will employ about 40 workers initially. Growth Opportunity East Midlands Airport has become a major China-UK cargo hub due to its central location, fewer flight restrictions, and available capacity. The airport recently expanded its wide-body aircraft stands from 7 to 12 out of 27 total stands. YunExpress now holds UK approval as a regulated agent and plans to offer services to other carriers going forward. Future Plans Central Airlines operates four weekly widebody flights to the airport. East Midlands handled over 413,000 tons of cargo last year and projects 54% freight growth, with plans for 1.3 million square feet of new warehouse space and additional aircraft stands.
