Averitt Expands LTL Operations Ahead of Freight Market Recovery
KEY DETAILS Averitt Express is investing heavily in its less-than-truckload network to capitalize on emerging market growth. The Cookeville, Tennessee carrier is adding 379 dock doors, 260,733 square feet of dock space, and 895,530 square feet of warehousing through 2027. The company is also expanding parking capacity with 1,953 truck parking spaces and 732 associate parking spaces. WHY IT MATTERS Executive Vice President Kent Williams told Transport Topics that LTL volumes are already showing year-over-year growth. He expects conditions to strengthen further as truckload capacity constraints continue, historically a catalyst for improved LTL demand. Data center construction is fueling additional flatbed and dry van activity. COMPANY POSITIONING LTL represents about 70% of Averitt's revenue, making it the carrier's largest division. The company ranks 12th nationally in the LTL segment and 29th overall among North American for-hire carriers. Rather than acquiring ex-Yellow Corp. terminals like competitors, Averitt is strategically expanding existing facilities in key markets including Charlotte and Louisville. OPERATIONS EXPANSION Averitt is also revitalizing its truckload division after years of minimal reinvestment. Improved rates have prompted the carrier to resume hiring over-the-road drivers, signaling confidence in sustained market conditions.
