I-40 Drug Bust: 16 Pounds of Fentanyl Found in Trailer Hidden Compartment
Key Details A routine traffic stop on I-40 in Haywood County, Tennessee turned into a major drug seizure on April 21. The West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force observed a tractor trailer traveling eastbound without due regard and initiated a traffic stop. Canine unit Pongo alerted agents to the presence of drugs during the inspection. A probable cause search revealed a secret compartment in the cargo containing approximately 16 pounds of fentanyl and a 50-milliliter bottle of Xylazine, also known as "Tranq" - a veterinary horse tranquilizer frequently mixed with fentanyl. Investigation Details The truck was hauling freight from Compton, California to Knoxville, Tennessee. The driver was identified and fully cooperative with investigators, who determined the driver had no involvement in the smuggling operation. Why It Matters Fentanyl and Xylazine represent some of the deadliest substances currently trafficked across the country. This seizure removes a significant amount of these dangerous drugs from Tennessee streets. Task Force Director Johnie Carter praised all agents involved, particularly noting the excellent work of Canine Pongo and his handler on their first seizure as a team.
